The best yarn to use with the base is either Tshirt yarn 9-11mm thick or cord yarn 9mm thick.

Here is just a raff idea of how many balls of yarn you'll need:

For the changing basket - about 2 balls of Tshirt yarn/1.5 balls of 9mm cord.

For the moses basket without the hood - about 6 balls of Tshirt yarn / 4 balls of 9mm cord.

For the moses basket with the hood - about 7-8 balls of Tshirt yarn / 5 balls of 9mm cord.

I would recommend to buy 1 ball extra just in case, which you can use to make a smaller storage basket to organize some baby bits.

The usage really depends on your tension and a pattern.

You can paint or varnish the base, or even add decoupage to give it a nice bespoke touch.
